BIG, FURIA emerge victorious as opening round of IEM Katowice Play

The final two results followed the trend of the higher-ranked team coming out on top in the opening matches.

BIG and FURIA were the final two teams to earn themselves an upper bracket berth after the opening round of the IEM Katowice Play-In concluded, doing so at the expense of Complexity and Permitta, respectively.

German squad BIG are on the hunt for a new home map since the removal of Dust2, and their victory on Anubis against Complexity suggested the new map may be an astute option. In the other matchup FURIA thoroughly overwhelmed Permitta, the sheer firepower of players like Kaike "⁠KSCERATO⁠" Cerato and Yuri "⁠yuurih⁠" Santos proving too much for the Poles to overcome.

Anubis was the field of play for BIG's match against Complexity, with the Germans starting on the T side. Johannes "⁠tabseN⁠" Wodarz and company found great success on their offense, largely due to the incredibly passive defensive approach of Complexity; the North American squad rarely had information as to what BIG were doing. This was enough, combined with some tidy executes, for BIG to earn a convincing 11-4 half.

Complexity had much more to offer on T side than they did CT, but losing the pistol and conversion meant the deficit was too much to overcome and they were eventually defeated 12-16.

FURIA utterly outclassed Permitta on the B stream, running out to an 11-1 lead with ease starting on the T side of Mirage. Such was their dominance that three FURIA players posted over 90 ADR on their offense, however they did get a little bit too loose towards the end of the half, allowing the Poles to get to a 4-11 scoreline. The Brazilians continued to roll over their opposition in the second half, picking up five rounds on the bounce on defense to clinically finish the map 16-4.

BIG will face off against FURIA at 19:30 for a spot in the group stage, whereas Permitta and Complexity are relegated to the lower bracket and must fight to keep their Katowice hopes alive.
